TODAY WE FEATURE TWO ORGANIZATIONS BORN OUT OF TRAGEDY AND DRIVEN TO HELP OTHERS FACING SIMILAR S THE ROC SOLID FOUNDATION AND TH CAMERON K. GALLAGHER FOUNDATION OVER 30 YEARS AGO, CANCER STRUC ERIC NEWMAN AND TOOK THE LIVES OF TWO OF HIS YOUNG COUSINS. AFTER LOSING HIS CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS DURING THE ECONOMIC CRASH IN 2008, ERIC DECIDED TO USE HIS KNOWLEDGE OF CANCER AND CONSTRUCTION TO BRIGHTEN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IMPACTED BY PEDIATRIC CANCER. SO HE FORMED THE ROC SOLID FOUNDATION. IT PROVIDES BAGS OF ESSENTIALS FOR FAMILIES WHO FACE THE SHOCK OF A CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND UNEXPECTED HOSPITAL STAY. ALSO IT OFFERS ROOM MAKEOVERS AND PLAYSETS AS A WAY TO PLAY IT FORWARD.>>MY FAMILY WAS IN PEDIATRIC CANCER WORLD FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS STRAIGHT. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A VERY RARE LIVER FORM OF LIVER CANCER. THEY ENDED UP TAKING HALF OF MY LIVER OUT AND I GOT PUT INTO EMISSION. AND MY DAD’S SISTER’S DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOSED. SO I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM COLLEGE AND SAID THAT SHANNON HAD FALLEN OUT OF REMISSION AND THE LEUKEMIA CAME BACK WITH A VENGEANCE AND WE LOST SHANNON PRETTY CLOSE TO THE AGE OF 17. MY DAD’S BROTHER, SECOND CHILD, 2 YEARS OLD. HER NAME WAS NICOLE. SHE GOT DIAGNOSED WITH AN INOPERABLE BRAIN TOMBER. TUMOR. WE LOST HER AROUND 5 YEARS OLD. I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THESE KIDS ARE GOING IN.>>MY SON AND OUR FAMILY WAS BLESSED. HE WAS DIAGNOSED AND WE WERE BLESSED WITH ROC SOLID AND WANT TO BUILD HOPE FOR OTHER FAMILIES AND PLAY IT FORWARD AND IT’S SO GREAT TO SEE THE FACES AND SMILES OF THESE KIDS. IT HELPS OUR FAMILY STAY CONNECTED AND HELPING ROC SOLID PLAY IT FORWARD.>>OUR FAMILY WAS GOING THROUGH PROBABLY THE WORST PART OF THAT. ERIC GOT IN TOUCH WITH US AND WOULDN’T SAY NO. STUBBORN. WE FOUGHT HIM AND FOUGHT HIM AND FINALLY SAID, CAN YOU STOP CALLING? AND THEY CAME OUT AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME — OUR BUILD HAD PROBABLY 70 PEOPLE THERE. IT WAS INSANE. WE’RE ABLE TO LOVE AND SERVE PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES. WE HAVE A GOAL. WE’VE IDENTIFIED THE TOP 25 HOSPITALS IN THE U.S. SO WE GO WHERE THEY ARE AND FROM THERE WE START TO LOVE ON THE FAMILIES FROM THERE.>>SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WHEN SHE WAS 6 WITH HIGH-RISK LEUKEMIA AND ENROLLED IN A CLINICAL TRIAL, 11 MONTHS INTO THE 28-MONTH TREATMENT PLAN, SHE RELAPSED. SO SHE HAD LEUKEMIA AND HAD A STROKE. IT WAS VERY HIGH RISK AND RARE. AT THAT POINT SHE HAD A BONE-MARROW TRANSPLANT. I WAS SO SHOCKED TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD TAKE OFF ON A FRIDAY FOR THIS.>>SO, ELECTRICAL, PAINTING, CARPET. THAT’S OUR PREP DAY AND SATURDAY IS WHAT WE CALL OUR REVEAL DAY. ON SATURDAY, AT 8:30, WE HAVE THE LIMO COME AND PICK UP FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND WE WHISK THEM OFF TO A BREAKFAST ACTIVITY OF THEIR CHOICE. WHILE THEY ARE GONE, WE HAVE ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS IN THE ROOM. WE ASSEMBLE THE FURNITURE AND STAGE IT AND GET IT ALL PREPARED. SO AT 1:30, THE LIMO ROLLS BACK IN, WE GET THE FAMILY UP THERE TO SEE THEIR ROOMS AND WE SURPRISE THEM WITH IT AND WE BRING THEM BACK OUTSIDE.>>OH, MY GOD!>>OH, MY GOD!>>I LOVE THIS.>>A DAY LIKE TODAY REALLY E EMBODIES ROC SOLID. WE HAD FAMILIES GIVING BACK TO FAMILYS THAT ARE IN THE SAME POSITION THAT THEY WERE IN NOT TOO LONG AGO.>>OH, MY GOSH. SO BEAUTIFUL.>>JUST SEEING EVERYBODY NOT OPENLY WORKING TOGETHER BUT BEING HERE FOR A COMMON CAUSE AND BEING HERE FOR THE FAMILY, WE GOT TO HANG OUT WITH THEM A LITTLE BIT ON FRIDAY AND THEN AGAIN THIS MORNING. THEY CAME OUT WHILE WE WERE SETTING UP. WE GET THAT PERSONAL INTERACTION TIME WITH THEM AND THAT CONNECTS THE VOLUNTEERS TO WHY THEY ARE HERE AND WHY THEY ARE DOING WHAT THEY ARE DOING. ♪>>I WAS 3 WHEN I LOST OUT ON PLAY, IF YOU WILL. BUT I SAW IT WITH MY COUSIN, NICOLE. SHE WAS 3. I WAS ABOUT 10. I SAW US PLAYING ON THE PLAYGROUNDS. ALL OF US, WE TOOK A TOWEL AND PUT IT AROUND OUR NECK AND WE THOUGHT WE WERE SUPERHEROS. WE STOP PLAYING AS ADULTS. WE WILL CHOOSE TO DO THAT. KIDS WITH PEDIATRIC CANCER, THEY DON’T CHOOSE THAT. IT’S SOMETHING THAT’S AUTOMATICALLY TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM WHERE THEY SHOULD BE DREAMING ABOUT PIRATE SHIPS AND BEING THAT SUPERHERO BUT SEEING THAT CHILD COME AROUND THAT CORNER, YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT A SIGH OF RELIEF AND TALKING ABOUT WHERE A CHILD IS A CHILD. CANCER SHOULD BE SCARED OF ROC SOLID BECAUSE WE HAVE A MISSION THAT WE’RE GOING TO BUILD HOPE FOR EVERY SINGLE CHILD. WE INTEND TO DO IT. WE’RE GOING TO DO THAT THROUGH THE GIFT OF PLAY. SHE WAS SCARED OF THE THOUGHTS THAT HAPPENED INSIDE HER HEAD. THERE’S MANY, MANY NIGHTS WE HAD TO HOLD HER HAND BECAUSE SHE’S SCARED, SCARED OF HURTING HERSELF AND NOBODY ELSE KNEW THAT AND PART OF THAT WAS OUR FAULT AND I LOOK BACK NOW AND I THINK CAMERON NEVER WANTED ME TO PROTECT HER. SHE JUST WANTED ME TO BE THERE. SHE DIDN’T WANT ME TO HAVE ALL OF THE ANSWERS. SHE WANTED ME TO BE PRESENT. NOT HIDE FROM THIS. YOU KNOW, KIND OF HIDING IT FROM IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE ASHAMED OF YOUR CHILD. NEVER ASHAMED OF HER. I NEEDED TO LET PEOPLE KNOW, YOU KNOW WHAT, THERE’S A LOT GOING ON IN MY FAMILY RIGHT NOW. I THINK IT WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE PEOPLE THAT MAYBE STEPPED AWAY FROM HER A CHANCE TO STEP UP. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN SHE WAS IN A DARK PLACE, SHE WOULD WONDER WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD GOD GIVE THIS TO ME AND WHEN SHE WAS IN A BETTER PLACE, SHE WOULD SAY, BECAUSE I CAN REALLY HELP PEOPLE. ON MARCH 14th, SHE WAS HAPPIER THAN I HAD SEEN HER IN A LONG TIME AND I REMEMBER HER LINING UP AT THE START LINE AND TAKING A PICTURE OF THE SUNRISE AND I KNEW WHAT THAT SUNRISE MEANT FOR HER. SHE RAN HER HALF MARATHON AND WHEN SHE CROSSED THE FINISH LINE, WE’RE CHEERING AND SHE’S SMILING AND SHE SAID I THINK I’M GOING TO PASS OUT AND SHE JUST COLLAPSED AND SHE FELL RIGHT INTO OUR ARMS AND IT’S THE MOST HORRIFIC TIME. I CAN’T TELL YOU THE HORROR, THE PANIC. EVERYTHING THAT WENT ON THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. THERE’S SO MUCH BEAUTY AROUND THAT. I CAN TELL YOU, THE PEOPLE AROUND WHO WANTED TO HELP. EVERYONE WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THAT END DIFFERENTLY. YOU KNOW, SUDDEN CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA IS ALL THEY CAN SAY. HER HEART JUST STOPPED BEATING. I MISS HER I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING TO CHANGE THAT DAY. I WOULD RUN THAT DAY OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE. WE’RE NOT IN CONTROL AND IF I FOCUS ON HOW MUCH PAIN I’M IN AND HOW MUCH I MISS HER, THAT DOES HER NO GOOD. IT DOES THIS WORLD NO GOOD. SHE IS VERY MUCH ALIVE IN THIS WORLD AND SHE’S MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE AND I COULDN’T BE MORE PROUD. WE HAD GONE INTO HER ROOM AND IT WAS A REALLY DIFFICULT MOMENT. THAT’S WHEN WE FOUND ALL OF THE PLANS. SHE WAS A MESSY, MESSY TEEN AND WE WENT IN THERE AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS MESS WAS THIS BEAUTIFUL, ORGANIZED FOLDER, EVERY BIT OF PLANS OF WHAT SHE WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH. WHAT THE GALLAGHER FOUNDATION HAS DONE FOR THEM IS ALLOW THEM AN OPEN FORUM TO TALK ABOUT THE THINGS THEY ARE STRUGGLING WITH ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS THAT THEY DIDN’T HAVE BEFORE. IT’S VERY HUGE BECAUSE THERE’S NO JUDGMENT ATTACHED TO THAT AND THEY REALIZE THAT THEY HAVE MORE IN COMMON THAN NOT. EVEN SOME GIRLS WHO MAY NOT HAVE GOTTEN ALONG WITH ONE ANOTHER BEFORE.
