UNT’s Foundation for Success

Since 1890, the University of North Texas
has provided students with a foundation for success. With 68 programs ranked among the nation’s
Top 100 and designation as a Tier One research university, UNT has reason to be proud. In recent years, UNT has made significant
strides to grow our enrollment − recruiting record numbers to our freshman classes and
bringing in more National Merit Finalists than ever before. UNT has funded new graduate student positions,
better supported faculty and expanded its research enterprise by launching the UNT Innovator
Awards and creating Institutes of Research Excellence. And perhaps most importantly, graduation and
retention rates have improved across the board. UNT also recently passed a rigorous reaccreditation
process and completely transformed its accounting systems, balancing our books, growing revenues
and adding reserves for the first time in years. We reorganized all of our administrative divisions,
worked with Toyota on internal process improvement and assembled a dynamic team of athletic leaders. In this short time, UNT also has revamped
much of its IT infrastructure and created a state-of-the-art data warehouse. We opened new buildings such as the University
Union while planning for future residence halls and an arts building, which is slated
to open in fall 2018. With the creation of Eagle Express, expansion
of new degree and course offerings and the addition of locations in McKinney, Dallas,
Gainesville and at the New College at Frisco, UNT has increased access and removed geographic
boundaries for students. Under President Smatresk’s leadership, we
set our sights on providing our students the best education in Texas, building our national
reputation, and closing the gaps with nationally prominent institutions. UNT has accomplished so much so quickly. We have strengthened our foundation and are
growing ever stronger to better serve our students and our state. We have made incredible progress in a short
time. But it’s not the end. This is only the beginning of what we will
achieve together.
