The Mellon Collection of French Art Exhibit Opens At The Frick Pittsburgh

MORE THAN 60 PEOPLE WENT LIVE SOUTH SIDE SATURDAY TO HELP FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER THIS IS THE REFRIGERATOR’S PITTSBURGH. THIS IS A — THE FRICKE’S PITTSBURGH. THE LATE PITTSBURGH WIFE COLLECTED ART AND RACED RACE CARS. MANY OF THE PIECES HUNG IN THEIR HOME. AND THERE’S A BATHTUB. IS IT OPENING SATURDAY AND IT HAS DRAWN HUGE CROWDS. AND THIS IS PAUL MELON’S HOMETOWN. THIS IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ROBIN NICHOLSON. WE’RE CHATTING A LITTLE BEFORE THE SHOW. AND THAT IS IMPRESSIVE TO BRING THE EXHIBIT HERE. YOU SAY THAT YOU’RE SEEING LARGER THAN EXPECTED CROWDS OF PEOPLE. WE ARE THE PREVIEW ON FRIDAY AND IT WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THAT WE’VE EVER HAD. IT WAS SO PACKED. IT WAS AMAZING. WHAT IS MAKING PEOPLE WANT TO GO? ARE THEY PIECES BY MANY FAMOUS FRENCH ARTISTS. AND THEY’RE BEAUTIFUL PIECES THAT THE MELONS ACTUALLY COLLECTED. AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN SEEN FOR A GENERATION BECAUSE BUDDY MELON DIED IN 2013. AND THE WORKS WERE HELD IN TRUST FOR HER AND HAVE NOT BEEN SEEN FOR A GENERATION. SO THESE ARE NEW WORKS BY MAJOR ARTISTS. AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ON DISPLAY. SOME OF THEM HAVE NOT BEEN ON DISPLAY BY AN EXHIBIT. THEY HANG ON THE ROOFTOP. AND THE WORKS — THE WORKS WILL TRAVEL ONLY ONCE IN ITS LIFETIME AND PROBABLY WILL NEVER TRAVEL AGAIN. AND THIS IS BECAUSE WE’RE DOING A MAJOR RESTORATION. AND YOU CAN SEE THE TRAVELING COLLECTION AND SEE IT. THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM IS WHERE IT IS. AND THEY’RE DOING THE GENERATION AND THAT IS WHY IT IS LOUD TO COME HERE TO PITTSBURGH? YES. AND I WORKED WITH THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS. SO SINCE I CAME TO PITTSBURGH, I’VE BEEN NEGOTIATING TO BRING THIS COLLECTION TO PITTSBURGH AS THE OPENING VENUE FOR THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME TOURING EXHIBITION. I’M GLAD TO HAVE YOU HERE SO WE CAN GET TO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE’RE SEEING. THIS IS FROM EDWARD DEGAR. THIS IS A LADY WITH THE HAT. YOU CANNOT SEE HER FACE IN THE MIRROR. IT IS A PUZZLE BUT IT IS A FASCINATING PUZZLE. I LOVE THAT. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SCULPTURES OF THE WORLD. THEY HATED IT AND THOUGHT IT WAS UGLY AND THOUGHT IT WAS SO INAPPROPRIATE. AND EVERYBODY ADORES THIS NOW. YES. WE’LL SHOW A COUPLE MORE, I BELIEVE. THIS IS A FRENCH ARTIST PAINTED IN 1942. THIS IS ONE OF THE PAINTINGS THAT THE MELONS DID NOT FRAME. THEY HUNG IT ON THE WALL WITH A NAIL. THEY LOVED PAINTINGS BUT DID NOT HAVE A SNOB THOUGHT ABOUT IT. AND THAT IS A ROMANTIC ARTIST. IT SHOWS PAUL’S GREATEST LOVE OTHER THAN ART WAS HORSES THAT HE BRED, GREAT RACE WINNERS. HE LOVED THEM. OKAY. AND WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL MO’NE. YOU SEE HIS WIFE STANDING AT THE AT THE WINDOW SURROUNDED BY FLOWER THIS IS A COLLECTION THAT BONNIE MELON ENJOYED AND TREASURED. THEY PAINTED THE EXTRAORDINARY SCENES THAT THE PARIS PAINTED. HE WAS TECHNICALLY UNTRAINED AND HE DEVELOPED AN EXTRAORDINARY REPUTATION THAT WAS ASTONISHING WORK ALL TOGETHER. THIS IS THE ONE THAT IS HUNG UP ON THE BAR. AND FREDDIE CAME TO VIRGINIA. AND WE FOUND LITTLE WHITE SPECS ON ON IT. AND THEY ANALYZED IT AND THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS TOOTHPASTE. IT GOT A FEW SPECS ON IT. WE KNOW THAT THESE PEOPLE WERE WELL TO DO, OBVIOUSLY. BUT WOULD YOU HANG A VAN GO IN THE BATHROOM IN YOUR HOME. I DON’T KNOW. IT WAS RESTORED AND IT IS DISPLAYED. THERE ARE 07 WORKS — 70 WORKS. WE EXPECT IT TO BE VERY POPULAR. IT IS ALMOST FOUR MONTHS TILL JULY THE 8th. SO PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY. BUT DON’T DELAY. IT WILL GET REALLY BUSY TOWARDS THE END. LET’S SAY IF SOMEONE IS NOT AN ART LOVER AND DON’T HOW HOW THIS APPRECIATE ART. IT IS STILL WORTH GOING TO SEE. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THE PERSON THAT DOESN’T HAVE A TRAINED EYE OF THESE WORKS? THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF SOME OF THE GREATEST ARTISTS IN THE 1800th CENTURY. THEY ARE SMALL AND ACCESSIBLE AND SPECTACULAR. IT IS A VISUAL FEAST. ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO SEE THE ORIGINAL MASTER PIECES WHEN THE MELON COLLECTION OF FRENCH ART IS ON DISPLAY NOW THROUGH JULY 8th. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. AND THEY RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET THE TIMED TICKETS ON LINE.
