The Huge Mistake The Craigslist Founder Made That Cost Him | Inc.

– Years before at IBM, I did have some mentors who basically advised me don’t be a jerk. (upbeat music) End of 98, beginning of 99, you know, I was slow to realize that I had to turn Craigslist from a hobby into a real company. There were some people
giving me good advice, but I had no real mentor
which I needed pretty badly. I ran the company through 99 myself. I made some smart my decisions, remaining true to my values like monetizing the site as little as possible. And I coasted a bit, but then I didn’t take people’s advice to get good legal help. I didn’t get people’s advice
to get good communications and PR help, because I was a stereotypical nerd, not listening to people well enough. (upbeat music) If I had a serious mentor, I would’ve made some
smart decisions faster. I would’ve stepped down as CEO, ’cause I would’ve realized immediately that, you know, I kind of
suck at being a manager. It took me that year for a lot to sink in. One of which I needed, a mentor, but that mentor would’ve advised me to step down a lot faster than I did. (upbeat music)
