Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look

Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look

This is a pygmy seahorse. It’s one of the smallest
species of seahorses in the world, smaller
than a paper clip. Camouflage is critical
to their survival. It’s how they hide
from predators. The seahorses are
too small and too fragile to make it on their own. So unless they find a place
that they fit in perfectly, they’ll die. So the pygmy seahorses spend
their entire adult lives on a type of coral
called a sea fan. Orange pygmy seahorses
live on orange sea fans. Purple seahorses live
on purple sea fans. But here’s the mystery. Do they search for a coral
that matches their color, or do they change their
color to match the coral? To explore that
question, you have to watch the process
unfold, and no one had ever done that
until this year. Biologists went
to the Philippines and collected a mating pair
of orange pygmy seahorses from a sea fan 80
feet below the surface. They rushed them back to the
California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and there, for
the first time in an aquarium, the pygmy seahorses survived. The scientists watched the
male and female seahorses performing their
daily courtship dance. They saw baby seahorses pop out
of their father’s brood pouch. The babies all started
out a dull brown color. So scientists
wanted to know, what would happen if they
provided a purple sea fan to the offspring
of orange seahorses? And they got their answer. The babies turned purple. They grew calcified
bumps called tubercles to match the coral’s texture. And there, they stayed. We humans tend to think of
who we are as mostly fixed. But in the ocean,
identity can be a fluid and mysterious thing.

  12. Dad : You are not my son, you're purple.
Son : I am your son, you gave birth to me dad.

  13. AMAZING video. Omg

  14. omg they look like Muppets !!

  15. Being born brown sounds to me like they're actually both purple and orange at birth, and they get rid of the chemical in their blood that gives them whatever colour is the opposite of the fan they land on, rather than becoming one or the other. They don't become orange or purple, they lose orange or purple.

  16. Oh nice our country! Thanks from the Philippines πŸ‡΅πŸ‡

  17. These creatures always inspire calm. Just magical…

  50. What will happen if they provided improvise transpatent crystal clear white sea fan?

  51. This is what youtube should be all about. Education of the world around us. It would lower pollution indirectly. πŸ˜‰

  52. Appearance is not identity. They are still seahorses. Trying to ascribe your human notions to the seahorses behaviour seems to me to highlight the fact that you people are lowkey trying to "prove" that "identity" is "fluid". Men are not women, women are not men- regardless of their color. A pygmy seahorse is a pygmy seahorse regardless of its color

  53. the words brood pouch make me feel uncomfortable

  54. Wow. My country has great marine biodiversity. Guess that's why China wants some on it.

  55. Didn't like the transidentity reference.

  56. What is that in 2:07 on the right?
I've had those things in my aquarium for months now living on the glass about a fifth of a millimeter long.

  57. I can't see the purple one o.o

    Hope they are not modified

  76. So what happens when you take the newly turned purple seahorse and put it back on the orange coral. Does it turn orange?

  77. Those seahorses are dang cute.

  78. Identity is not fluid and mysterious for a sea horse. Just the outer shell changes with the environment. Stop confusing kids with you messed up narrative.

  79. That was cool to know

  80. So small so cute

  81. From white to niπŸ…±πŸ…±a

  82. I’m on Philippines so it’s real?

  83. omg my country is Philippines

  84. I wonder what would happen if you would put a purple seahorse in with a different color coral. Would it change? Would its mood be affected?

  85. Learning a lot about the beautiful marine life in the Philippines, where I reside! A few months back, scientists were finally able to record rare rainbow octopuses! (They have it here on youtube)

  86. Yay philipinnes the country were i belong!

  87. It's not "fluid identity" deep look, it's adapt to your environment.

  88. Hey that our conutry

  89. What a music πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ bgm is πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ
