How to hide TV cables in the wall – low voltage HDMI CAT5 & Speaker wires

How to hide TV cables in the wall – low voltage HDMI CAT5 & Speaker wires

Here’s a quick video to show you how to hide
the wires going up to your TV. Now there is a lot of different kits you can
buy and some are quite expensive. This is one of the cheapest ways to do it. The only real problem is running the power
cable behind the wall. Now it’s not code compliant to do that, even
though a lot of people will do it anyway. What we will do in this video is run the low
voltage wires. That is all the other wires we are going to
use. And in a later video, I will show you how
to tap into the electrical outlet below and put in one up behind the TV. Before you start cutting a hole in the wall
you need to know where the studs are and because this is a power outlet I know they always
nail it to a stud. You can knock on either side of the outlet
and where you hear a higher pitch, that is where your stud is. The wires go into a faceplate and that attaches
to a bracket. So that is going to clamp on to the Drywall. This is the one I am going to use. Its made by Carlon. It’s a Low Voltage Old-Work Bracket. Old-Work means the house is already built
and I’m going back and adding this. It’s really easy to mark where you need to
cut it out. You can do it like this. But they designed a better way to mark the
wall. Flip it around and it has 4 holes on each
corner. Put your pencil there and mark the wall and
then connect the dots. This is a Drywall Saw. You can also use a utility knife. But this helps you get a cleaner cut. I usually stab it in first to make sure I
don’t hit anything on either side. This bracket has little plastic tabs. One on top and one on the bottom. You want to keep it all the way down as you
are tightening the screws. So that it is clamping the back of the drywall. Tighten the bottom screw and then the top
screw. Next figure out where you want the hole behind
the TV. Don’t put it too close to the edge of the
TV because you don’t want to see it from the side. Now it’s really easy from here. I’m using a coat hanger, shoving it down the
wall. Pull it through the bottom hole and then I
tape the wires I want to run to the coathanger. Once you pull the wires through, put the plate
on. So that is it. That is how you run your Low-Voltage wires
up to your TV. Low-Voltage is things like Data Cables, HDMI,
Speaker Wires, Cat-5. That’s all low voltage. Remember, even though you see a lot of people
running power cables or power plugs up the wall this exact same way, it’s not up to code. What you should do for that is tap into the
bottom outlet and run a Romex cable up and put a new outlet up top. I’ll address that in a later video. I hope this video has been helpful. If you have any questions, leave them in the
comment section and I’ll do my best to answer. Also if you want to support this channel you
can do that with the links in the video description. Have an awesome day guys! See you later.

  85. So you people that claim you don’t have drywall on your interior, how do you have electricity to run a tv? You just run extension cords across your dirt floor, fed from your village generator? Is it like in the Flintstones cartoon where a pterodactyl spins a wheel to power the damn thing? I’m surprised you have internet. If you have a flush mounted wall outlet and your electric wires are hidden, you probably have drywall.
