‘Flat roofing and tapered insulation’ course introduction

Hi, I’m Neil Richards. I’m Tapered Roofing Manager for Kingston Insulation. Flat roofing can be tricky. Choosing the substrate, the method of falls, the waterproofing system and incorporating sufficient drainage can be a balancing act that can easily go wrong. In this course, we will look at what defines a flat roof and the common construction types, different deck substrates and waterproofing options. We will look at the importance of a fall on a flat roof, the U-values required and the significance of a roof survey. Lastly we will discuss tapered roofing and how this can overcome various design and construction challenges. Tapered insulation is a flat roofing solution which can design out risk and produces minimal waste. It offers a system approach which can easily be designed around existing restrictions on both new build and refurbishment. By the end of the course you should be able to define different types of flat roofs, common ways to construct different roof types and the pros and cons of different waterproofing systems. You will also understand the importance of roof surveys, understand U-values for new build and refurbishment in England, Scotland and Wales. Lastly you will understand how tapered roofing works, and the benefits it can bring to your project. you
