Durham Cathedral’s Foundation 2020 campaign

Durham Cathedral’s Foundation 2020 campaign

Durham Cathedral is an icon of the North East
of England One of the Country’s best loved buildings
and a world architectural treasure. Bill Bryson called it the best cathedral on
planet Earth. The Cathedral has been a constant presence
for nearly a thousand years. Connecting people to their faith, their history
and to each other. Built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert,
Durham Cathedral holds internationally important treasures and relics associated with the North’s
best loved saint. The Cathedral is also the resting place of
the Venerable Bede, the father of English history. In 1986, Durham Cathedral was one of the first
sites in the UK to be designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Recognized for its outstanding
heritage and continuous use as a living place of worship and learning. Today the Cathedral welcomes over three quarters
of a million visitors each year. From all over the world to the North East. Putting Durham on the map as a major center
for pilgrimage and tourism. The Cathedral is equally important to our
local communities, who rightly have a sense of ownership of their cathedral. Caring for such an awe inspiring place is
a privilege, but also bring with it unique challenges as we work to safe guard our historic
building for generations to come. Just like the Cathedral, Barclays has entrenched
history in the region with a presence for over 250 years. Barclays routes in the region go back to Jonathon
Backhouse and Company, who were established in 1774 and since then our presence has continued
to grow. With colleagues branches and offices based
all across the North East. One thing has remained strong throughout and
that is our commitment to serving the communities in which we all live. Whether that be our recently launched £500
million Northern Powerhouse fund, or our apprentice first recruitment policy or our entrenched
client relationships across the region. For example, we have banked Durham Cathedral
for 50 years and our incredibly proud to be able to offer such a broad range of support
to the Cathedral. To meet the challenge of stewarding this magnificent
cathedral, we’re building a $10 million endowment by 2020, to support the annual program of
conservation and repair. Foundation 2020 will keep alive the heritage
craft skills of our in house works team and protect the Cathedral’s long term future so
that it can be enjoyed for centuries to come. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a £1
million grant to foundation 2020, which is available to match the first million we raise. Effectively doubling our donations as well
as being the Cathedral’s bank, Barclays are also getting behind foundation 2020 through
local branch and also employee support. With our match fundraising, we’re able to
double event funding the Cathedral receives, which in turn the Cathedral can double through
the heritage lottery fund. The Cathedral is one of Barclays few clients
that has close to over a millennia of history. We intend to continue working very closely
with the Cathedral for the years to come to ensure that in another 1000 years time the
Cathedral remains the incredibly special place it is and continues to inspire people for
life.
