Concrete & Masonry Waterproofing How-To Video

KING, the SAKRETE People, bring you a
Waterproofing How-To Video featuring KING Xypex high’n dry
and SAKRETE brush’n seal with special appearances by SAKRETE plug-tite
and SAKRETE Concrete Adhesive. King Packaged Materials Company
offers two pre-blended products, which can be used for waterproofing
and sealing concrete surfaces. KING Xypex high’n dry can be used on
bare or untreated concrete, whereas SAKRETE brush’n seal can be used
on coated or treated concrete. KING Xypex high’n dry is a non-soluble, surface applied permanent chemical waterproofing treatment that uses crystalline growth to prevent
water seepage due to hydrostatic pressure. KING Xypex high’n dry can be used
for interior or exterior applications. This product is designed for waterproofing untreated concrete surfaces, such as basement walls, floors, storage tanks, cisterns, or swimming pools. SAKRETE brush’n seal is a heavy duty,
dual-purpose moisture sealant that creates a protective coating or decorative finish. It dries to a medium white finish,
and can be painted with latex paint. SAKRETE brush’n seal can be used for interior or
exterior applications, both above or below grade. This product is designed for waterproofing treated surfaces, such as basement or foundation walls, cisterns or swimming pools, and other
concrete block, brick, or masonry surfaces. In this video you will see KING Xypex high’n dry
applied to a section of bare, untreated wall, and SAKRETE brush’n seal applied to a section of painted wall. You will need: stiff wire brush and soft bristle brush, semi-stiff nylon brush, plastic mixing pail, square metal trowel, water spray bottle, measuring cup, sponge or float, rubber gloves, and protective clothing. To start, make sure you’re working on a
surface that’s structurally sound and clean. Prior to this project, repair any cracks
or holes using SAKRETE plug-tite. To waterproof a concrete block wall
using KING Xypex high’n dry, ensure that the wall is free of any
dirt, grime, mold, or paint. Use a wire brush to remove larger debris, and then
the soft bristle brush to clear smaller particles. Clean the area to be sealed with water. Very porous concrete may require several
applications of water to saturate completely. One hour before application, dampen the wall and maintain dampness throughout the entire application. The mixing ratio for KING Xypex high’n dry is
five parts powder to two parts water. So, for five cups, or 40 ounces of powder, which is about 2 KG of product, use two cups, or 16 ounces of water. In a pail, add half of the required water,
then add the powder, followed by the remaining water. Mix to a creamy consistency, and avoid a soupy mix. Mix only as much material as can be applied in ten minutes, and use the material immediately after mixing. If the material starts to set, agitate briefly,
but do not add more water. Dip the brush into the bottom of the pail,
so that the material does not settle. Apply the material to the wall with a
thick, semi-stiff bristle brush. Finish with a final stroke in one direction. Curing is essential to promote the crystalline growth
and hardening of KING Xypex high’n dry. Allow the product to sit for one to two hours,
until the surface is hard to the touch. Keep the surface damp for 48 hours by
fog-spraying the coating three times a day This will also prevent chalking or dusting. For structures that hold water, keep damp for three days, and then allow to air dry for 12 days. Flush thoroughly before filling. To waterproof a painted concrete wall
using SAKRETE brush’n seal, ensure that the wall is free of any dirt, sand, or dust. Use a wire brush to remove larger debris, and then the soft bristle brush to clear smaller particles. For walls previously painted with
non-cement based paint, remove as much material as
possible to create a good bond. One hour before application, dampen the wall. Immediately prior to application, ensure that
the surface is damp, but not dripping. Maintain this damp surface
throughout the entire application. The mixing ratio for SAKRETE brush’n seal is 1 KG, or 2.2 lbs of product, which is one fifth of the pail, to 293 milliliters, or 10 ounces of water. When working on a painted surface, replace at least one third of the water with SAKRETE Concrete Adhesive. This will help the SAKRETE brush’n seal mixture
to adhere to the application surface. In a pail add half of the required water, then, add the powder followed by the remaining water. Mix to a pancake batter consistency,
and avoid a soupy mix. Allow the mixture to sit for five to ten minutes
before applying to the wall. A proper mixture should adhere
to a brush without dripping. Stir the mix occasionally during
application. Apply SAKRETE brush’n seal with a
semi-stiff nylon bristle brush. Scrub the mixture into the surface,
filling all of the pores. If the wall becomes dry or the mix starts to pull,
dampen the original surface again. Do NOT add more water to the mixture. Finish with a final stroke in one direction. If a decorative appearance is desired, finish with a sponge or float. For normal waterproofing, a
two-coat application is recommended. Allow the first coat to cure for 24 hours, then
dampen the surface and apply a second coat. Allow the application to harden
for approximately three hours. Then, fog-spray with clean water.
Keep the surface continuously damp for three days. SAKRETE brush’n seal must cure for approximately
28 days, and dry before painting. For bare or untreated surfaces,
use KING Xypex high’n dry. And for painted or treated surfaces,
use SAKRETE brush’n seal. Both products keep a variety of concrete
or masonry applications dry and waterproof. King Packaged Materials Company offers a wide
variety of professional grade, easy-to-use products designed for DIY and contractor-based
home repair and improvement projects. Our portfolio includes well known
