Can’t Stop the Feeling (Justin Timberlake) – Super Easy Piano Tutorial – Hoffman Academy

Can’t Stop the Feeling (Justin Timberlake) – Super Easy Piano Tutorial – Hoffman Academy

Hello and welcome. I’m Joseph Hoffman, and
today we are learning how to play “Can’t Stop the Feeling”
a.k.a. “Dance Dance Dance” as performed by Justin Timberlake. This is my preparatory
level tutorial for anyone very new to piano, let’s say zero to six months’
experience. If you’re looking for something harder, you can check out my
level 1 or level 2 tutorial. What. Oh, the hair? I heard this song was from some
movie about trolls or something. Okay let’s come to the piano to get started.
One thing about my piano tutorials is you’re not just going to learn to play
songs, you’re going to learn a few things about reading music too.
Let’s take a quick look at the sheet music. We’ve got this symbol here which
is called a whole rest, it’s a kind of little black rectangle. Whenever you see that you’re
going to count 4 beats of rest. This is one whole measure. These bar lines show
you where the measures are, so here’s one measure. If you’re going to count 1 2 3 4.
Just do nothing, a rest means you’re just waiting, and then right here you’ll see
this note head is a D and you tell that you’re in the treble clef you’ve got
this line right here and it’s just below this bottom line. That note’s called D, and
you’ve got 3 of them, so we’ll play D D D. Alright, so on the piano you’ll take your
right hand finger 2, which is your pointer finger, and on this middle D
after you wait four beats of rest, which means do nothing, let’s try it- one two
three four- you waited and then you go D D D. So try that with me whenever we rest
I’d like you to count how many beats out loud that will help you keep the steady
beat and then we’ll play 3 Ds. So try this with me, let’s count it, go. ♫”One two three
four, D D D.”♫ Good. Now, in the real song what you’re
going to hear is Justin Timberlake is going to be singing ♫”Nothing I can see
but you, when you..”♫ and while he’s singing all that that’s when you’re counting
those four beats, and then you’ll play ♫”dance, dance, dance”♫ with him.
Okay now let’s go back to the sheet music and see what comes next after you
play “dance dance dance” then you’ve got this quarter rest, which means “rest” or do
nothing, be silent for one beat. So you can just kind of think “rest” for that. Now,
well do we have next? Another whole rest. So once again we’re going to count “one
two three four” and then three more Ds, ♫”dance dance dance, rest,”♫ then we do that
again. Four more beats of rest “one two three four, dance dance dance,
rest” and then four more beats of rest. and during these rest this is again when
Justin Timberlake is singing and here he’s singing ♫”nobody leaving soon so keep”♫
and then you’re going to play ♫”dancing.”♫ This is a D as we’ve seen before, and
this one goes a little bit lower, you can see it goes off that staff and so it
gets this line through the middle of it and that’s called C or middle C. And then
this looks kind of like a whole rest, that’s a little different because
instead of hanging below the line like a whole rest, this is a whole rest that I
just drew, and this is a half rest which only lasts for two beats, one two, if it
sticks up from the line like this. Okay so after ♫”dancing”♫ then you’re going to
go “one, two.” Okay so let’s try all of that so far on the piano. When you see the
rest, go ahead and count it out loud and then we’ll play the D D D, which is “dance
dance dance.” There we go. Let’s try it on the piano.
Get your finger 2 ready on D, ready, go. ♫”One two three four,
dance dance dance, rest. One two three four, dance dance dance, rest, one two three four,
dance dance dance, rest, one two three four, dancing, one two.”♫ Good.
Okay now what I’d like you to do is press pause and try that on your own.
You’re going to count the beat out loud during those rests, and then play your
DDD and that last time you’re going to play DC. Remember to count the rest out
loud that’s going to really help you keep the beat when we add in the
soundtrack in a minute. So press pause, practice that on your own,
then press play when you’re ready to try with me. Ok let’s try it with the soundtrack now.
So I’ll play along with you and here comes the music ready and
“1 2 3 4 dance dance dance, rest, 1 2 3 4, dance dance dance, rest, 1 2 3 4 dance dance dance, rest 1 2 3 4, dancing.”♫ Nice job.
Okay, now to make it a little bit trickier this time I’ll sing the Justin
Timberlake part. I know I probably don’t sound as good as Justin Timberlake but
bear with me, and you’re going to just play dance dance. So now when you’re
counting 1 2 3 4 during that rest, that’s when you’re
going to be hearing the voice part that goes “nothing I can see but you when you”
and then on “dance” that’s where you come in. Ok let’s try this, here we go. ♫ ♫ Nothing
I can see but you, when you DANCE DANCE DANCE rest.
Good good creeping up on you, so just DANCE DANCE DANCE. All those things I
should do you but you DANCE DANCE DANCE. and ain’t nobody leaving soon – so keep DANCING.♫ ♫
Nice job. Ok in my videos you can always press
pause for more time to practice on your own, or rewind and try it again.
Otherwise let’s keep going and check out the next part in the sheet music. Okay at this next part of the music we
get this new theme. First we’ve got a rest, and now we’ve got this part that
goes ♫ “Got this feeling in my body.”♫ Let’s figure out these notes. Like I said we’ve
got that one beat of rest, and then this note which you can see the line that
bottom line of the treble clef staff goes right through the middle of that
note head, so that makes that an E. And then you’ll see that’s also an E E E. Four
Es in a row, then it steps down to the same note we had for “Dance dance dance,”
which is a D, and you can see this note steps down again to C then back up to D
and then steps back down to C and then you’ll see this curved line connecting
this C to this C, which is called a tie. When two of the same notes are tied
together, you actually don’t play this one, you just kind of hold it extra long.
So let’s just kind of ignore that one. We have E E E E DC DC and that makes got
this feeling in my body let’s try it on the piano
so we’ve still got our hand in the same position as before our thumb or finger
one is on c d e f g every finger kind of on its own white key we’re going to
start with finger three on e like this e-e-e e-e-e-e c and with words that got
this feeling in my body now you try that on your own good now let’s break it down
for ease got this feeling now you try good then on the words in my try that
good now let’s try body which is also Daisy now you try good now let’s put it all together got
this feeling in my god your turn good now back to the sheet
music you’ll see we have these two rests in between rest rest and then it does
the same pattern again e-e-e-e DC DC so press pause and I’d like you to practice
that phrase a few times on your own until it feels really comfortable then
press play when you’re ready to go on good now let’s take a look at the next
phrase we’ve got another quarter rest and then e e this time it skips up to
the next line up which is a G so we have e e G band back to E and then the same
notes we had before dc-dc so all together e EG e d c d c let’s try that
on the piano so in the same position as before
two E’s d e GG skips up ee g so we use fingers three and five e
e g e now you trust good now let’s do it together
the words are wanna see you let’s try together go wanna see you and then it
goes d e e for move your body can you play that go try it with me go move your
body now to put it all together d EG d now you try good notes play
together ready go one see you yah ding press pause and try that phrase a few
times on your own until you’re really confident with it and then press play to
go on okay so let’s look at how all these
pieces fit together we’ve got got this evening in my body
rest rest and it does that again got this feeling in my body then this
different one wanna see you move your body rest rest then it goes back to our
original phrase ee ee dc-dc rest rest and then another one got this feeling in
my body rest rest got this feeling in my body then it ends with one more got this
seething in my body come on and with these two notes and you can see
now instead of being on the middle c line it’s an extra line below that is a
below middle C and a G so we end with an AG let’s find that on the piano so we
were in this position but we’ve got a skip below middle C down to here AG
you’re going to come out of this position for the last two notes come on
let’s try that from got this feeling in my body come on now you try that okay so
going back to measure nine this whole section we’ll play got this feeling in
my body we play that two times then we do wanna see you move your body just one
time then we go back to got this feeling in my day we do that four times and then
we finish with come on that’s your part okay so let’s try it all the way through
if you want maybe you should just watch this time or if you’ve been practicing
this for a while and you’re ready to try it with me you can we’re going to go
through the whole thing now from the beginning and have some fun with the
soundtrack here we go two three and nothing not can see but you when you
dance and feel the good-good creeping up on
you so just dance dance dance all those things I should do you but you dance
dance dance and they nobody leave and to keep dancing got this feeling in my body
got this feeling in my body wanna see you move your body got this feeling in
my body got this feeling in my body got this feeling in my body got this feeling
in my body come on great job learning how to play can’t
stop the feeling have lots of fun practicing and see you next time now this feeling in my body kept this
feeling in my body is feeling in my body feeling in my body I wanna see you your
body is feeling in my body I got this feeling in my body
