Alumni Story | The Founding of Books and Cooks!

I mean I think about some of the experiences
I’ve had as a Shaw Intern and the responsibility I was given and the opportunities I was given
in that center with the support that they provided. A group of leadership interns had set a precedent
that they apply to The Clinton Global Initiative Conference. And Coleen asked us, Tim, Greg and myself if
we wanted to get together to form an idea and submit it to to attend the conference. I remember sitting in a dorm room with Tim
and Allison. We were sitting in my sorority house and throwing
ideas around. What do we enjoy doing? What is there a need for? What do the centers that we work in want? I thought about what we could do for Parkside
Commons, which was the subsidized housing unit. Obviously literacy rates were extremely low
at the time. In the center they had very nutritionally
deficient foods offered to them. So we just kind of blended all these ideas
and said hey what if we did a nutritional literacy program. We kind of divided and conquered. I think I was more on the maybe the logistics,
business, on the how can this work, how can we structure a program? I think being creative with what what the
task was at hand was something that I brought. A lot of the work that I did was based on
a lot of the writing. And then all of us were willing to take risks. People around us we kind of gandered their
interest, and I think that as a leader, thats what you’re trying to do. We were recognized by the Clinton CGI. Two days before we were supposed to leave for the
conference we got a call from the foundation and they said we have the chance to put a
couple students on the Today Show, would you like to go on? I was standing right next to Bill Clinton
and told him about books and cooks and we had a nice little talk. We never thought that that one room in that
one grant application would lead to multiple meetings with Bill Clinton and to have it
still exist today is really something special.
